Cheniere Announces Publication of Updated Peer-Reviewed LNG Life Cycle Assessment

Cheniere Energy, Inc. has published an updated life cycle assessment (LCA) study detailing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity of its liquefied natural gas (LNG). This peer-reviewed study, featured in the American Chemical Society’s Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering Journal, utilizes a novel gas-pathing algorithm to model natural gas pathways from production basins, through the transmission network, to Cheniere’s liquefaction facilities at Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi. The study reveals that in 2022, the GHG emissions intensity of Cheniere’s LNG, when used for power generation, is 20–28% lower than the estimates provided in the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) 2019 study. Additionally, it underscores the importance of incorporating measurement data into LCAs to accurately reflect variations in GHG emissions across natural gas supply chains.
