Shell says global LNG demand to rise 65 percent by 2050
Shell’s long-term outlook sees LNG demand rising to nearly 700 mtpa by 2050, around 65% above 2025 levels. Growth is expected to be driven mainly by South and Southeast Asia, which could account for about 40% of global LNG imports by 2050 as power demand rises and coal-to-gas switching continues. Shell also sees fast-growing new demand segments, with LNG bunkering forecast to reach 27 mtpa by 2035, seven times today’s level. On the supply side, about 180 mtpa of new LNG capacity is expected by 2030, but Shell says a further 200 mtpa will still be needed through the 2030s and 2040s to meet long-term demand.
